City Council FAQ

When does the Council meet?

The City Council meets the first Monday of each month. If the first Monday is a holiday, the Council meets the following evening. Council meetings are scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Committee meetings are held the 3rd Thursday of each month starting at 6 PM.

What is the difference between a Council workshop and a Council meeting?

 The Council may hold workshops on any number of topics during the year. Workshops generally allow the Council to meet, receive information, discuss items, etc. The Council, however, will only officially vote in formal Council meetings.

How can I get something on a Council agenda?

 If you have an issue or item you wish to have considered by the Council, please contact the City Clerk (827-3980) and ask that you be placed on the agenda. Certain items, by their nature, will be referred to the appropriate Council sub-committee.

How can I get a copy of a Council agenda?

 All agendas for City Council meetings and committees are available in the City Clerk’s office.

Are all Council meetings open to the public?

 Yes, with the exception that certain legal or personnel matters are conducted in executive session, that is, closed to the general public. Examples of executive session items are requests for abatement of taxes based on poverty, update on union negotiations, sensitive personnel matters, etc. All executive sessions are announced on the agenda and the appropriate portion of the Maine Statute covering the session is cited.

Which Councilor represents my part of the City?

 In Old Town, the 7 Councilors are elected at-large; that is, they do not represent any part of the City specifically, but serve the community as a whole.

How can I run for the City Council?

City Council elections are held in November every year. Please contact the City Clerk’s office for more information.

Where are the Council’s minutes kept?

 In the City Clerk’s office. You can get a copy of the minutes of a meeting by contacting the City Clerk.

Who elects the Council President?

 The Council elects its president every December. Council Presidents serve for 1 year.

How can I reach a Councilor?

 You can write the Council care of the City Manager’s office, or you can call or write them direct. Please see the listing of Council members for addresses.
